Site Speed as a Search Ranking Factor

Site Speed, as a Search Ranking Factor, as been discussed a lot lately by many SEOs  since Google decided to add site speed as a signal for Search Engine Ranking.

Many SEOs are not happy with this situation, while many others rushed to switch their websites to faster dedicated servers.

Matt Cutts, of Google, clarifies this “speed” situation on his post “Google incorporating site speed in search rankings“. In short, here is what he tells SEOs:

  • Site speed is only one of more than 200 already existing signals used for ranking pages.
  • Fewer than 1% of search queries are affected by the site speed signal.
  • Speeding up your site is a good thing for the visitors of your website.

So, Don’t panic! :-)

Another interesting point from the official Google Webmaster Blog, in the post “Using site speed in web search ranking” is that the site speed signal actually only affects visitors searching in English on Google.com.
